Roughing it
Our stay at the B and B last night was rather pleasant, clean warm beds, hot shower, a very¬†knowledgeable¬†and friendly host and hostess and a breakfast of grains, bacon (both the American and Canadian parts rolled into one) handmade sausages, farm fresh eggs and the best¬†hash brown¬†I’ve ever tasted.
Well as the title suggests that’s all over know. We left Naas this morning at 10:30 and began our ride toward Kildare. Upon seeing our path once again blocked by expressway and realizing that Kildare was more out of our way than not, on our journey toward Athlone, we¬†decided¬†to throw caution to the wind and take a new route toward the northwest.
On our way we went past the ruins of an old church and a grave yard which actually contained graves within the ruins itself, stopped in the small town of Athenwood to eat the lunch of baguettes, meat and cheese we purchased at the market that morning, then we found the Canal Road.
You see, we had been riding for quite a few miles of highway¬†shoulder¬†and while legal,¬†didn’t¬†instill a sense of safety nor peace. So I began looking for alternate routes, and found it in the Canal road. It is a dirt road that runs along a serene canal with very little traffic(it still has some, but there were only a few cars.
We took many pictures of the calm surroundings, crossed a bridge which was constructed in 1796, and even found and were ranted at by some gypsies.
Now about 4 miles from the end of the road we’ve found a secluded bit of grass surrounded by hedges in which to setup camp for the night, not quite sure if we’re suppose to camp here, but it should be interesting to say the least.
Attached is a picture of myself as we ate lunch and right before we helped a poor guy get his car off of the road after it stalled.

i don’t see the picture…maybe it didn’t get posted? it sounds like your intended route might turn into something not so intended. i hope you are having fun still. did the gypsies ask you to cross their palms with gold and tell you your future…?

All my time in culinary school, and I never learned how to make a Bagget. I did however, learn how to make baguettes. I am going to ask for my money back.
(Please understand, I have to give you a hard time, even though you are on the other side of the world.)

I’m trying to be good about correcting grammar and spelling. It looks like Kevin beat me to it. Hope you’re still having fun even though it’s not quite the same as you thought it was going to be. Looking forward to seeing more pictures!

I, too, am sadly not seeing your promised picture. 🙁
Sorry my husband is a jerk, but at least he’s a funny jerk. It’s part of why I love him. 🙂
I kind of like how your trip is going… it is more of an adventure that way, as long as you still get to do the main things you wanted to do, get back to Dublin in time, and you eat Irish cheeses and drink your pints of Guinness. That means you, too, Will! I want proof of a pint!

Wow, sounds like you guys are having a great time! Hope you guys won’t kiss the Blarney Stone. That always sounded really gross to me, with all the caked -on lipstick and stuff from other people. Yuck! Hope you two enjoy all the non-touristy stuff I’m sure biking allows you to see.:)
